More than 170 Animal Equality activists gathered outside the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) and the Berlaymont building in Brussels today, opening four days of demonstrations timed to the AGRIFISH Council meeting in Luxembourg and the EU Livestock Strategy, due from Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen on 7 July.

The average adult in the EU consumes between 80g and 85g of protein per day, more than most population groups require, and animal-based products account for roughly 60% of that intake, according to a new report from the European Environment Agency (EEA). The report, “Protein diversification: strategic risks and opportunities for sustainable food systems,” argues there may be scope to rebalance Europe’s protein mix while still meeting nutritional needs.

KMI Brands has sold its Noughty hair care brand to UK-based Komerz for an undisclosed amount. The brand boasts a 97% natural ingredients profile, and its sale comes as KMI searches to secure licensed partnerships across fragrance and beauty. 

Dutch real estate developer Schipper Bosch has signed an agreement with NIZO Food Research to acquire the real estate of the Food Innovation Park in Ede, the Netherlands, and take over its further development.

UK vegan pet food company Omni has raised £11 million in a funding round led by IW Capital, with participation from Redrice Ventures, Rootbridge Capital, Digitalis Ventures, Lever VC, Ani.VC, and Ami Capital. The B Corp certified company says it has grown more than tenfold over the past year and added over 100,000 customers since its Dragons’ Den appearance, where it secured backing from Deborah Meaden and Steven Bartlett.
