UPL Expands Biological Crop Protection Lineup, Positions Biologicals as Complement to Synthetic Programs
12 September 2026, Iowa: UPL is broadening its United States portfolio of biological crop protection and nutrition products, moving beyond its traditional base of post-patent conventional pesticides into a growing lineup of proprietary biological offerings, company representative Jeff Ellis said in comments reported September 11, 2026, following the company’s presence at the 2026 Farm Progress Show held near Boone, Iowa, in early September.
The company detailed four products spanning nitrogen management and disease and pest control. NiCor is a seed applied biological nitrogen fixer designed to colonize plant root systems and fix atmospheric nitrogen throughout the growing season, positioned by UPL as a complement to, rather than a replacement for, synthetic nitrogen fertilizer programs. NitroCor combines the same nitrogen fixing technology with a two strain biological nematicide aimed at managing nematode eggs and juveniles, a pest problem that has historically been difficult to control with conventional chemistries. Vasiplan is a biological fungicide positioned for application at the VT growth stage, while Nuvita is applied around the V5 stage to support crop nutrition through a critical early development window.
Ellis said UPL has been conducting small plot research and on-farm testing to evaluate how the biological products perform under real world growing conditions, rather than relying solely on controlled trial data, an approach the company says reflects the variability biological products can show across different soil types, moisture conditions, and regional pest pressures. UPL is positioning the products as tools that support nutrient availability and protect yield potential at specific points in the growing season, rather than as wholesale replacements for existing synthetic herbicide, fungicide, and nematicide programs. The company indicated it expects to bring additional biological nitrogen products to market within the next two to three years.
The announcement fits into a broader pattern across the crop protection industry, where major players including UPL, Bayer, Corteva, BASF, and FMC have all been expanding biological pipelines in response to slowing discovery rates for new synthetic active ingredients, rising regulatory scrutiny of older chemistries, and growing grower interest in tools that can help manage resistance in pests and pathogens that have adapted to conventional products over decades of use. Biological nematicides in particular are drawing attention because nematode damage is often underdiagnosed in the field and few effective conventional chemical options remain on the market following the phase out of several older nematicide actives.
For UPL specifically, the push into biologicals is part of a stated strategic shift away from reliance on commoditized, post-patent generic pesticide sales, a category that has faced significant price pressure in recent years amid oversupply from Chinese technical material producers. Building a proprietary biological portfolio gives the company differentiated products that are harder for competitors to replicate quickly and that can command premium pricing relative to generic formulations.
