UK Approves 15 New Plant Protection Products Across Major Crop Protection Suppliers

09 September 2026, London: The United Kingdom’s pesticide approval pipeline has added fifteen new plant protection products to the market this year, according to BCPC’s Online UK Pesticide Guide, with authorizations spanning nearly every major agrochemical supplier active in the UK and covering herbicides, fungicides, and one biostimulant product, as confirmed in the guide’s most recent update published August 3, 2026.

New products are authorized in Great Britain and Northern Ireland under Marketing Authorizations for Plant Protection Products, known as MAPP numbers, issued following review by the Health and Safety Executive’s Chemicals Regulation Division. The latest batch of approvals reflects continued product renewal and reformulation activity by both large multinational suppliers and generic manufacturers competing in the UK market post-Brexit, where the country now runs its own authorization process independent of the EU’s centralized system.

Among the new approvals, BASF secured clearance for Spectrum, a dimethenamid-P herbicide for sugar beet, and Elanvy, a combination fungicide pairing azoxystrobin with mefentrifluconazole for use across multiple crops. Bayer received approval for Cofeno, a pre-emergence prosulfocarb herbicide for potatoes, winter wheat, and winter barley. FMC Agro was the most active single registrant in the batch, securing four separate approvals, including Calibre SX, a thifensulfuron and tribenuron herbicide, and Shark and Spotlight Plus, both based on carfentrazone-ethyl. Adama, Sharda, Sipcam, Sumitomo, and UPL Europe each secured at least one new approval, including UPL’s Iodus, a laminarin-based biostimulant, one of the few non-conventional pesticide products in the list.

Several of the approvals are geographically restricted, applying only to Great Britain or only to Northern Ireland, a distinction that has become more common since the UK’s post-Brexit authorization system diverged from the EU framework the whole of Ireland previously operated under jointly. Suppliers must now often file and track separate authorizations for the two jurisdictions rather than relying on a single UK-wide or EU-wide approval, adding administrative steps that smaller registrants in particular have had to absorb.

This matters to global agribusiness because the UK remains an influential proving ground for new crop protection chemistry and formulation combinations, even though it is a comparatively small acreage market by global standards. Its independent, post-Brexit authorization pathway is now a live test case for how a mid-sized, high-scrutiny regulatory system processes both novel actives and reformulated products outside the EU’s centralized process, and the mix of established multinationals and generic suppliers securing approvals in this batch illustrates how competitive the UK’s post-patent and off-patent product segments have become. Companies planning multi-market European launches increasingly treat UK approval timing as a separate variable to plan around rather than assuming EU and UK clearances will move in step.
