Faunalytics Launches AI Tool to Search Its Animal Advocacy Research Library

Nonprofit research organization Faunalytics has launched The Lens, a free AI-powered tool that lets animal advocates query its research library in plain language rather than searching manually through thousands of entries.

Faunalytics, based in Olympia, Washington, has spent 25 years building what it describes as the largest collection of animal advocacy research summaries, now totaling more than 6,000 entries. The Lens is designed to make that volume more usable for advocates who may not have time to search the archive directly, returning synthesized answers with citations linking back to the underlying studies.

Grounded only in the research library

Unlike general-purpose AI chatbots, The Lens does not search the open web. It draws exclusively from the Faunalytics Research Library, Original Research, and related resources the organization publishes. According to Faunalytics, the tool prioritizes recent studies, flags when a conclusion relies on older or limited data, and notes regional caveats where relevant. When a topic is not well covered in the library, the organization says The Lens states that directly rather than generating a speculative answer.

How the tool was built

The tool runs on a vectorized database of Faunalytics content connected through a Model-Context Protocol server, which links the database to Claude Sonnet 4.5 as the underlying language model. No account or sign-up is required to use it.

The Lens was developed by Kyle Behrend, who handled the database and MCP engineering, and Faunalytics Resource Director Karol Orzechowski, who worked on the database and system prompt design, with support from Stray Dog Institute.

Faunalytics has published research relevant to the plant-based sector before, including a 2026 study that found the large majority of global veganism data comes from Europe and North America, and separate research on barriers to plant-based eating among young Indian consumers. The Lens gives advocates and researchers a way to query that body of work, along with the rest of the library, without combing through it manually.
