Thailand Eyes Carbon-Fed Microbial Protein as New Export Frontier

Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce is exploring carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technology as a route into the global alternative protein market, according to a report from The Nation Thailand. The ministry’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) has flagged what it calls “carbon protein” as a frontier industry that could serve both food security goals and the country’s decarbonisation targets.

From factory emissions to fermentation feedstock

The process centres on capturing carbon dioxide directly from large emitters such as power stations and heavy manufacturing plants, then feeding the gas to microbes in closed fermentation systems. The microbes convert the CO2 into a protein-rich biomass, which can then be processed into ingredients for human food, animal feed, and alternative protein products.

According to TPSO director-general Nantapong Jiralertpong, the approach has moved beyond laboratory trials into commercial-scale production internationally, and could become a mechanism for export growth as global trade rules tighten around environmental standards, The Nation Thailand reported.

A large domestic emissions base

Ministry of Energy data cited in the report shows Thailand’s energy sector remains the country’s largest emissions source. It has positioned its climate and industrial policy around decarbonization, low-carbon growth, and a circular economy, rather than treating emissions only as a liability. The TPSO also positions CCU as a high-value-added industry shaped more by biotechnology, intellectual property, and safety standards than by land or raw material costs, unlike conventional agricultural commodities.

Positioning against a growing global market

Thailand already produces a portion of its food exports from what it terms “future food” categories, including alternative protein, and the government has previously supported the space through public procurement targets favouring plant-based meals at official functions.

No specific company, facility, or commercial partner has yet been named in connection with Thailand’s plan, which currently sits at the policy and positioning stage rather than active deployment.
