Bayou Best Foods Buys Berlin Seaweed Brand BettaF!sh in Cross-Atlantic Seafood Deal

Bayou Best Foods has acquired BettaF!sh, the plant-based seafood brand operated by Berlin company Wunderfish GmbH, combining a US shrimp producer with a European seaweed specialist under one owner.

BettaF!sh, founded in 2020, sells seaweed-based fish alternatives across European retail and foodservice, led by the TU-NAH tuna substitute and SAL-NOM salmon substitute made from European seaweed and legume proteins. Bayou Best Foods produces plant-based shrimp for the US market, distributed through Sysco, US Foods, PFG, Ace Natural, and What Chefs Want, and sold into restaurants nationally.

The two companies plan to move products across the Atlantic in both directions. Bayou Best Foods’ shrimp will be offered to BettaF!sh’s foodservice customers in Europe, while BettaF!sh’s tuna and salmon products will be introduced to Bayou Best Foods’ US network over time.

Two women-led brands consolidate

The acquisition brings together companies with distinct regional footholds. BettaF!sh contributes seaweed-based product development and an established European retail and foodservice base, while Bayou Best Foods adds US foodservice distribution and commercialization experience in plant-based seafood.

Alt-seafood thins out, survivors scale up

The deal lands in a plant-based seafood segment that has seen recent contraction, with several producers exiting. Consolidation offers a route to shared distribution and reduced duplication of manufacturing and development functions across the two markets.

BettaF!sh’s products are built on European seaweed cultivation, which the company positions as a regenerative alternative to wild fishing. The company has pursued this through EU-backed research partnerships including the FunSea seaweed project and the Wageningen-led Healthy Algae initiative.

Deniz Ficicioglu, founder and CEO of BettaF!sh, framed the acquisition as a continuation of the company’s existing direction.

She stated, “This is a natural next chapter for BettaF!sh. Both of our companies were built on the belief that protecting the ocean and creating exceptional food should go hand in hand. By joining forces, we can move faster, reach more customers, and help shape the future of seafood together.”
