Fermenta Biotech Receives Indian Approval for Plant-Based Vitamin D3 Ingredient（2026这些数字什么意思）

Fermenta Biotech has received approval from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to market its plant-based vitamin D3 ingredient for use in foods and health supplements, expanding its portfolio beyond conventional animal-derived vitamin D3.

The approval enables Fermenta to commercialize VITADEE Green®, a plant-source cholecalciferol developed and manufactured in India. The ingredient is derived from lichen rather than lanolin, the sheep’s wool-derived source traditionally used to produce vitamin D3, allowing it to be used in vegan and vegetarian formulations.

Vitamin D3 is widely used to fortify products such as dairy alternatives, beverages, edible oils and dietary supplements. While vitamin D2 has long been available from plant sources, vitamin D3 has historically relied on animal-derived raw materials.

Growing options for plant-based fortification

Fermenta said the ingredient was developed and manufactured entirely in India. The company stated that domestic production could reduce reliance on imported plant-based vitamin D3 ingredients while supplying food and nutraceutical manufacturers in the country.

The approval also adds another plant-derived vitamin D3 ingredient to the Indian market. FSSAI has previously authorized several other lichen- and plant-based vitamin D3 products under its non-specified food ingredient approval process.

Fermenta is an established producer of vitamin D3 and nutritional ingredients, supplying customers in multiple international markets. The company began commercial-scale production of its plant-source vitamin D3 active ingredient in 2025 following in-house process development.
