Biosphere Adds CO2-to-Protein Technology With NovoNutrients Deal

California-based biomanufacturing company Biosphere has acquired NovoNutrients, a Sunnyvale, California firm that converts industrial CO2 and hydrogen into single-cell protein through gas fermentation.

A reactor system built to solve a scaling bottleneck

NovoNutrients, founded in 2017, developed a proprietary loop reactor system designed to improve gas-to-liquid mass transfer, a longstanding bottleneck in scaling gas fermentation for protein production. The company’s technology has been validated from lab scale through containerized pilot systems and has informed the design of larger commercial reactors. Its resulting single-cell protein is intended for use in food and feed applications.

NovoNutrients raised more than $22 million across multiple funding rounds, including an $18 million Series A led by Woodside Energy and CM Venture Capital, with earlier backing from SOSV/IndieBio.

Biosphere’s core technology replaces the steam-based sterilization systems traditionally used in bioreactors with a UV-based process, an approach the company says reduces capital and maintenance costs while widening the range of viable reactor designs. With NovoNutrients now part of the business, Biosphere gains an established base in gas fermentation and high-intensity aerobic fermentation, technology it plans to apply across its broader manufacturing platform. Biosphere has also worked with US defense agencies on separate biomanufacturing contracts, part of a wider push by the company into industrial and commercial bioproduction beyond food.

Where NovoNutrients fits among CO2-to-protein players

NovoNutrients’ approach places it alongside a small group of companies working on autotrophic single-cell protein, including Finland’s Solar Foods, whose Solein product is produced through a similar gas fermentation process using CO2 and hydrogen and has already reached commercial markets in Singapore and the US. Where Solar Foods has focused on scaling its own production and moving toward human food applications, NovoNutrients has centered its work on aquaculture and animal feed markets, an area where fishmeal and soy remain the dominant, resource-intensive protein sources. The acquisition folds that feed-focused CO2 conversion expertise, along with NovoNutrients’ intellectual property and microbial strains, into Biosphere’s reactor design work.
