The Protein Brewery Secures €18M to Enter the European Market

Dutch food ingredients company The Protein Brewery has completed an €18 million extension of its Series B funding round, the company announced today, shortly after receiving EU Novel Food authorization for its mycoprotein ingredient Fermotein.

The round is led by new investor ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund, with existing investors Invest-NL, Novo Holdings, Madeli, and the Brabant Development Agency (BOM) also participating again. Total funding raised by The Protein Brewery, founded in 2020 and headquartered in Breda, now exceeds €70 million, following the company’s €30 million Series B round last September.

Expansion of production capacity and European sales

The funds will be directed toward four priorities. Production capacity at the company’s Mijkenbroek facility will expand to more than 2,000 metric tons annually. The Protein Brewery plans to begin marketing Fermotein in Europe after summer 2026, with an initial focus on active nutrition products such as ready-to-mix powders and bars, as well as functional foods and beverages. The company is also advancing clinical research into Fermotein’s health benefits and pursuing regulatory approvals in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and India.

Fermotein is a whole-food mycoprotein produced through biomass fermentation. It contains 50% protein with a complete amino acid profile, 30% dietary fiber, and a range of micronutrients and fungal bioactive compounds. According to the company, it can be incorporated into ready-to-mix powders, shakes, bars, baked goods, and dairy alternatives without affecting taste or odor.

“With this additional funding, we move from proving that whole-food mycelium is a desirable ingredient to delivering it at the scale that brands and manufacturers need,” said Thijs Bosch, CEO of The Protein Brewery. “Fermotein meets the challenge of feeding a growing and aging population with fewer environmental resources.”

First EU Novel Food authorization for European-grown mycoprotein

Over the past 12 months, The Protein Brewery became the first company to receive European Commission authorization for a mycelium-based ingredient under the EU Novel Food Regulation. According to the company, its entire 2026 production capacity has already been sold to customers in the US, while a pipeline of active nutrition customers is building in the EU and UK.
