Palmer Holland Adds Precision-Fermented Lactoferrin to Personal Care Portfolio Through FerrinX Partnership

North American speciality ingredient distributor Palmer Holland has signed a distribution agreement with US biotechnology company FerrinX to bring NanoFerrin, a precision-fermented form of the protein lactoferrin, to cosmetic and personal care brands across the region. Commercial-scale production is scheduled to begin later this year.

The partnership positions NanoFerrin as a multifunctional bioactive for skincare, targeting pigmentation, blemish-prone skin, and skin structure through a single ingredient.

Removing the dairy bottleneck

Lactoferrin is a glycoprotein historically sourced from bovine milk, where it is present only in trace amounts. Traditional extraction has been constrained by cost, scalability, and batch consistency, with global production sitting at around 850 metric tons annually and prices ranging from $600 to $1,500 per kilogram. The protein has been studied for decades for its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, but its commercial use outside infant nutrition has remained narrow.

FerrinX’s process uses microbial fermentation to produce a bio-identical version without animal inputs, broadening compatibility with vegan and cruelty-free formulations.

Three skincare applications

The cosmetic positioning leverages lactoferrin’s affinity for binding free iron. According to FerrinX, the protein can neutralize iron deposits linked to under-eye discoloration, rather than relying on optical brighteners to mask them. Because acne-causing bacteria depend on iron for growth, sequestering it disrupts their metabolic pathways while leaving the broader skin microbiome intact. The company also points to research indicating that lactoferrin can stimulate skin cells to produce more collagen and hyaluronic acid, supporting firmness and hydration internally rather than through topical occlusion.

The multifunctional angle differentiates the ingredient from category-specific actives such as benzoyl peroxide or vitamin C derivatives, which typically address one concern at a time.

A growing precision fermentation category

Palmer Holland, established in 1925 and headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, distributes specialty raw materials across the United States and Canada. The company has been part of global distributor Barentz since 2019.
