Yunnan Leafy Vegetables Target International Retail Markets

Global G.A.P.-certified leafy vegetables from Yunnan, China, are now available for international retail programs, offering year-round supply backed by certified food safety, traceability and sustainable production practices.

Yunnan is one of China’s leading vegetable export regions, with favorable growing conditions supporting year-round production. According to data from China’s National Bureau of Statistics, the province recorded approximately 1.38 million hectares of vegetable cultivated area and production of 30.94 million tonnes in 2024. Its stable supply and diverse product range provide a solid foundation for export markets.

As trade and cultural connections between China and the Middle East continue to deepen, Chinese vegetables are gaining a wider presence across the region. While initially serving Chinese consumers, more products are now entering mainstream retail and foodservice channels and reaching consumers from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Against this backdrop, the Global G.A.P. certified vegetables from Yunnan cover over ten varieties, including leafy vegetables such as pak choi, spinach, Chinese cabbage, and romaine, as well as garlic chives, parsley, and mangetout

Industry insiders noted that, alongside existing domestic food safety and quality certifications, Global G.A.P. certification further enhances Yunnan vegetables’ alignment with international procurement standards and supports the continuous improvement of cultivation management and traceability systems.

Yunnan Leafy Vegetables Target International Retail Markets

In recent years, growing demands from international retail markets for food safety, traceability, and supply chain transparency have driven the wider adoption of Global G.A.P. certification in the fruit and vegetable trade. In the Middle East in particular, modern retail channels are placing increasing emphasis on supply chain compliance and stability, which makes certified products more likely to gain access to procurement systems.

“Yunnan vegetables exported by us were previously focused on wholesale and foodservice channels in the Middle East,” said Lan Bilong, General Manager of Onedayone Group Zhangzhou. “With Global G.A.P. certification, we now have the opportunity to further access retail procurement systems, expand market channels, and reach more consumers.”

However, for leafy vegetables and other highly perishable products, Global G.A.P. certification is only the first step into modern retail channels. Maintaining quality during long-distance transport remains a key challenge. Beyond expanding retail channels in the Middle East, exporters also need to improve cold chain logistics and efficiency to ensure stable access to Europe and other overseas markets.
