Ukraine’s Organic Berries and Nuts Growing Value and Strengthening Europe’s Supply Chains

09 September 2026, Kyiv: The latest Organic Berry and Nut Market Study of Ukraine shows that the sector’s development is increasingly driven not only by production volumes, but also by higher product value, export diversification, certification and deeper integration into the European Union (EU) market. While physical exports of organic berries declined in 2025, their value increased substantially. At the same time, organic walnut exports recorded exceptional growth, nearly doubling both in volume and value.

The Organic Berry and Nut Market Study of Ukraine was conducted by the Organic Standard certification body in partnership with the State Institution “Entrepreneurship and Export Promotion Office”, the national project Diia.Business with the support of Switzerland within the framework of the Global Quality and Standards Programme (GQSP Ukraine) implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

These results underline that Ukraine is a reliable and increasingly competitive partner in the European organic market.

Organic berry exports gain value despite lower volumes

In 2025, Ukraine exported to the EU 15,414 tonnes of certified organic berries worth EUR 39.8 million. Compared with 2024, export volume decreased by 12.4%, from 17,603 tonnes, while export value increased by 23.5%, from EUR 32.2 million.

The contrasting dynamics were largely caused by unfavourable weather conditions, which reduced yields and limited the availability of raw materials. Lower supply coincided with strong demand and contributed to higher prices. As a result, Ukrainian exporters generated significantly more revenue despite shipping fewer products.

This performance highlights the sector’s ability to preserve economic value under difficult conditions. It also demonstrates that export growth should not be measured by volume alone. Higher prices, product quality, certification and processing are becoming increasingly important drivers of competitiveness.

Wild-collected berries remained the foundation of Ukraine’s organic berry exports. Their export volume declined from 13,346 tonnes in 2024 to 11,786 tonnes in 2025. However, export revenue increased from EUR 22.6 million to EUR 27.1 million, representing growth of almost 20%.

Cultivated organic berries followed a similar pattern. Export volume decreased from 4,258 tonnes to 3,628 tonnes, while export value increased by more than 31%, from EUR 9.6 million to EUR 12.7 million.

The figures indicate that Ukrainian organic berries retained strong demand and market value even during a period of constrained supply.

Ukraine’s leading organic berries strengthen their position in Europe

Wild-collected bilberries and elderberries remained the backbone of Ukraine’s organic berry exports in 2025. Bilberries were the country’s largest export category, reaching 6,822 tonnes and generating EUR 19.2 million, while elderberry exports amounted to 2,591 tonnes worth EUR 3.1 million. Together, these two wild-collected berries accounted for more than 60% of Ukraine’s total organic berry export volume. Ukraine is also the leading third-country supplier of organic bilberries to the EU, making its supply strategically important to European organic value chains.

Among cultivated organic berries, raspberries and strawberries remained the leading export categories. Although raspberry exports declined from 2,740 tonnes in 2024 to 2,228 tonnes in 2025, their value increased by more than 30%, from EUR 6.1 million to almost EUR 8 million. Strawberry exports followed a similar trend, with lower volumes but higher export value.

Ukraine’s diverse organic berry portfolio, comprising 31 products from 16 berry species, is increasingly supported by value-added processing. While frozen berries continue to dominate exports, the growing presence of freeze-dried, dried and puréed products highlights opportunities to increase export value and further strengthen Ukraine’s position in the European organic market.

Strong integration into European markets

In 2025, Ukrainian organic berries were exported by 55 domestic companies to 73 importing companies in 18 countries. The European Union remained the sector’s primary destination.

Poland and the Czech Republic together accounted for almost half of Ukraine’s organic berry export volume. At the same time, Germany and Italy generated particularly high export revenues, reflecting demand for higher-value products and premium product categories.

The sector’s export geography also demonstrates resilience. Even under wartime conditions, Ukrainian companies continued to maintain established commercial relationships, develop new trade channels and supply a broad range of European markets.

Organic walnuts deliver exceptional growth

The strongest performance in 2025 came from organic walnuts.

Export volume increased from 2,560 tonnes in 2024 to 4,910 tonnes in 2025 — growth of almost 92%. Export value more than doubled, rising from EUR 7.9 million to EUR 16.6 million, an increase of approximately 110%.

This made organic walnuts the main driver of export revenue growth across Ukraine’s combined organic berry and nut sector.

Ukraine is already the leading supplier of organic walnuts to the EU among third countries. Between 2021 and 2024, Ukrainian exports to the EU ranged from 1,880 to 2,780 tonnes annually. Other supplying countries, including Moldova, the United States, Kyrgyzstan, Chile, Argentina and Uzbekistan, shipped substantially smaller volumes.

Ukraine’s strong position reflects both its natural resource base and the ability of domestic operators to meet international organic certification requirements. It also highlights the importance of maintaining reliable supply and certification integrity for European importers.

In 2025, Ukrainian organic walnuts were exported to 9 countries. The Netherlands was the largest destination, receiving almost 1,950 tonnes, or nearly 40% of total export volume. Austria, Romania, France and Germany were also major markets.

The rapid growth of walnut exports demonstrates the sector’s capacity to expand even during a period of considerable economic and logistical challenges.

From resilience to long-term competitiveness

Ukraine’s organic berry and nut sector is proving that resilience can drive growth. Despite wartime challenges and difficult production conditions, exporters have maintained their presence in key European markets, increased export value and strengthened their role in international supply chains.

The next stage is clear: greater value addition. Expanding processing and developing higher-value products, from freeze-dried berries and powders to purées and innovative organic foods, can unlock new market opportunities and reinforce Ukraine’s competitive position.

With its diverse natural resources, experienced producers, strong certification expertise and established presence in the EU, Ukraine is well positioned to build on this momentum. For European buyers, Ukrainian organic berries and nuts offer more than reliable supply: they represent certified quality, market expertise and a partnership with strong long-term potential.
