Future Food Quick Bites: Oatly x Breadfast, Blended Koji Beef & Plant Milk Day

New products and launches

Swedish oat milk giant Oatly has teamed up with Egyptian e-grocer and retailer Breadfast to launch a line of summer refreshers in piña colada, strawberry and Brazilian lemonade flavours on the latter’s in-store menu.

German retailer Rewe Group‘s own-label Ja! brand has released ice cream bars using Planet A Foods‘s ChoViva cocoa-free chocolate, which are available in classic and almond flavours at Rewe Nord.

Also in Germany, mycelium protein maker Nosh.bio‘s blended koji protein-beef mince, burgers and meatballs have landed to Saltz, a global marketplace for chefs and foodservice operators.

French plant-based meat startup La Vie has partnered with lifestyle brand Hôtel Mahfouf to bring its products on the latter’s 100% vegetarian menu for August. Dishes include a teriyaki tofu bowl, a croque monsieur, croquettes, and bacon fries.

Vegan seafood brand Oshi is bringing its salmon fillets to Michigan after securing a listing with Better Health Markets and Cafes, which will stock the product in 14 stores in the state.

And this year’s World Plant Milk Day will be held on Saturday, August 22, the highlight feature being its Heritage Campaign, a globe mapping 5,000 years of plant-based milk tradition across six continents; an interactive Milkscape; and a seven-day challenge to try a different non-dairy option each day (which over 47,000 people have signed up to so far).

Company, finance and policy developments

Swedish sustainable protein biomanufacturer Curve, which rebranded from Re:meat last year to go beyond cultivated meat, has appointed Pernilla Audibert as its new COO. She is the co-founder and former CTO of precision fermentation startup Bond Pet Foods.

The persistent price pressure on beef is finally hitting a ceiling for consumers in the US, with volume sales falling by 0.3% in the 13 weeks ending in mid-July. In contrast, volumes grew by 5% in the same period in 2024 and 2025.

The US Food and Drug Administration has recalled 94 cases of vegan cheese puffs made by Canadian brand Frankie’s Organic because they may contain undeclared milk. The food safety agency said the product was mislabelled, with the move stemming from two complaints of allergic reactions from customers in Canada.

The Canadian government’s Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Nova Scotia’s Community Economic Development Fund have each invested C$600,000 ($433,000) to help the Verschuren Centre, a biotech scale-up hub in Sydport Industrial Park, expand its precision fermentation capacity. The C$1.2M ($866,00) investment will enable the site to support 10 additional companies per year and create 100 highly skilled jobs.

Alternative protein think tank the Good Food Institute Europe‘s managing director, Alex Mayers, has stepped down to take up a new role at The Humane League UK next month.

Finally, the government of Hungary has banned the use of wild animals like elephants, big cats, bears, primates and giraffes in circuses, a law that will come into effect on January 1, 2027.
