The UK government has launched a £20 million funding competition to support the development of agricultural robotics and automation technologies, as it seeks to help farmers tackle persistent labour shortages and improve productivity across the country’s farming sector.
The initiative, announced under the Farming Innovation Programme, will provide funding for collaborative research and development projects involving farmers, AgriTech businesses, researchers and technology developers.
The new competition is designed to accelerate the adoption of smart farming technologies capable of reducing reliance on manual labour while improving efficiency in crop production. Organisers say funded projects should focus on developing practical automation solutions that can be deployed on farms to address labour-intensive operations such as planting, harvesting, crop monitoring and field management.

Earlier this year, the UK announced an additional £53 million for projects supporting sustainable farming technologies, bringing total investment in agricultural research and innovation to £123 million. The government says these investments are intended to strengthen food security, improve environmental sustainability and accelerate the commercialisation of home-grown AgriTech innovations.
Farming Minister Stephen Morgan said the investment demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting farmers through innovation and ensuring the UK remains a leader in agricultural technology. He noted that advances in robotics and automation have the potential to transform farming by increasing efficiency, reducing production costs and helping businesses overcome workforce shortages.
Eligible applicants are expected to submit collaborative proposals that demonstrate clear commercial potential and practical on-farm impact. Projects should involve partnerships between farmers, researchers, AgriTech companies or other organisations capable of developing technologies that can be adopted across the agricultural sector.
The competition reflects a growing global shift towards precision agriculture, robotics and artificial intelligence as governments and industry invest in technologies that improve productivity while addressing labour constraints and the long-term sustainability of food production.
