Food Pioneers Acquires Dutch Training Provider Food Hub After Ten Years

Dutch knowledge organization Food Pioneers has acquired Food Hub, a Netherlands-based training and education provider focused on the food and agriculture transition, marking the end of a ten-year run for its three founders.

Food Hub was founded in 2016 by Joris Lohman and Joszi Smeets, later joined by Jeroen van IJzerloo as a partner. According to the company, thousands of professionals, entrepreneurs, students, farmers, and policymakers have gone through its courses and training programs over the past decade, alongside advisory work with companies and public bodies on change processes.

Existing Food Hub courses and training programs will continue to be offered. Food Pioneers said the offering will be expanded over the coming years to include themes such as the protein transition, regenerative agriculture, entrepreneurship, and sustainable food innovation.

Founders move into new roles

Lohman is continuing his work as a member of the Dutch House of Representatives, Smeets is continuing as a trainer, educator, and process facilitator, and van IJzerloo is now advising organizations in the food and agriculture sector.

“We look back with pride on ten years of Food Hub and everything we built together with our team, our students, and our partners. That this work will now continue at Food Pioneers, a party that shares our mission and drive, feels like the right outcome. We’re each going our own way, but the mission we started with continues,” stated Joszi Smeets, co-founder of Food Hub.

Consolidating under one platform

Food Pioneers is the public name under which Stichting Flevo Campus now operates. The foundation was established in 2018 as part of the Almere municipality’s food strategy and is based in Almere and Flevoland, in the Netherlands. It connects entrepreneurs, researchers, educational institutions, governments, and residents working on food system change, and has been led by director Filip Otten since 2025.

Otten said combining Food Hub’s knowledge base with Food Pioneers’ existing network and programs would extend the reach of both organizations’ training offerings.

We want to preserve and grow that. By combining the strength of Food Hub with our network, our programs, and our expertise, we can reach more people. This way, we’re building a strong training platform that helps professionals, entrepreneurs, and students actively contribute to the food transition.”
