Danish microalgae ingredients company Algiecel has appointed Mette Ingeman Pedersen as Chief Financial Officer and Tove Feld as Chairperson of its Board of Directors, as the company moves toward commercial production of its marine bioactives platform.
Algiecel develops microalgae-based ingredients for the nutrition, pet food and personal care sectors, positioning them as alternatives to fish-dependent supply chains. The appointments sit alongside a leadership team headed by CEO Susanne Palsten Buchardt, who took over from founder Henrik Busch-Larsen in 2025.
Finance and industrial experience join the leadership
Pedersen joins Algiecel after more than 20 years in senior finance and advisory roles across the Nordic region, including a position as CFO of Topsoe’s Power-to-X business. Her background also includes finance leadership roles at Saxo Bank, Nordea and Danske Bank.
“Algiecel is entering a decisive stage, where strong financial discipline must support ambitious commercial execution. My focus will be on helping Algiecel build the structure, investor confidence and financial resilience needed for long-term growth,” stated Pedersen.
Feld brings 35 years of experience in energy, infrastructure and renewables, including senior roles at Ørsted and its predecessor DONG Energy, where she served as Chief Technology Officer and Head of Engineering. She has also held leadership positions at Siemens Wind Power and DNV.
Feld said,”Algiecel’s opportunity is not only about producing microalgae; it is about building a reliable industrial platform for marine bioactives. I look forward to supporting the team as it moves towards commercial scale.”
Moving from pilot to commercial production
Algiecel’s photobioreactors cultivate Nannochloropsis oceanica microalgae using artificial light, water and captured CO2, a model the company says offers more predictable supply than marine-sourced ingredients. Algiecel raised DKK 60m (€8m) in 2024 to support the continued development and scale-up of its technology, according to the company.
CEO Susanne Palsten Buchardt said the new appointments reflect the operational demands of that transition. She said, “Scaling Algiecel requires more than promising technology. It requires operational discipline, financial rigour, industrial experience and a leadership team capable of turning innovation into reliable commercial supply.”
