Nutrition From Water To Take Equity Stake in Algarve Microalgae Firm PhycoFerm

Nutrition from Water (NXW), the New Zealand microalgae ingredients company behind the Marine Whey protein range, has agreed to take an equity stake in PhycoFerm, a strain development and biotechnology company based in Portugal’s Algarve. The investment formalises a joint research strategy between the two and is intended to accelerate NXW’s first and second generations of biological assets. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Concentrating the upstream biology

PhycoFerm develops proprietary non-GMO microalgae strains alongside fermentation and downstream processes. Its strain-improvement work draws on classical random mutagenesis, adaptive laboratory evolution and high-throughput screening to identify variants with higher productivity, robustness and targeted metabolic traits. The arrangement lets NXW consolidate that upstream work with a dedicated specialist while it continues process development, manufacturing and formulation elsewhere.

“We are excited about the partnership because it allows us to stay focused on our core strengths while contributing to the transition of microalgae-based ingredients into scalable, commercially viable platforms for next-generation ingredients,” said Benjamin Schmid, COO of PhycoFerm.

A cohort of specialist partners

In late 2025, NXW partnered with packaging group SIG to combine algae-based protein beverages with aseptic packaging formats. In early 2026 it agreed a manufacturing scale-up with Chinese fermentation group Jiangsu Jiangshan Pharmaceutical, intended to bring Marine Whey to market roughly 18 months earlier than planned, according to NXW. The PhycoFerm deal will add strain development to that structure

Federico Duarte, CEO of NXW, framed the model directly: “We see success coming from a coordinated cohort of allies doing what each one of them does best.”

For PhycoFerm, the rationale is the biology itself. “We believe microalgae are the most efficient and nutritionally complete production organisms available to us today. They have the potential to reshape how the world makes protein and functional ingredients,” Schmid stated.

Deepening an Algarve base

The deal will extend NXW’s presence in the Algarve, where it has worked with Portuguese manufacturing partners as it prepared Marine Whey for market. Both companies tie the collaboration to the region’s ambitions in marine biotechnology.

Hugo Barros, Head of Division at CRIA, the University of Algarve’s entrepreneurship and technology transfer division, noted, “The region has the science, the coastline, and now the companies to become a genuine hub for Europe’s blue bioeconomy.

“The partnership between PhycoFerm and NXW Nutrition from Water is exactly the kind of collaboration that reflects this momentum, bringing next-generation strain development to commercial scale in southern Portugal.”
