Wildtype Turns to Kickstarter for First Direct-to-Consumer Push With Cultivated Salmon Lox and Cell-Derived Skincare

San Francisco-based Wildtype has opened a Kickstarter campaign to sell its cultivated salmon lox directly to consumers for the first time, alongside a new skincare line built from the same cell-cultivation process. The company has raised over $62,000 of its $75,000 goal at the time of writing, with 23 days remaining in the campaign.

Founded in 2016 by Justin Kolbeck and Dr. Aryé Elfenbein, Wildtype received FDA clearance for its cultivated coho salmon last year, becoming the first cultivated seafood producer cleared to sell in the US. Since then, the product has appeared on menus at restaurants including Kann in Portland and Robin in San Francisco. The Kickstarter campaign is the company’s first move into direct retail.

Lox and skincare from the same cells

The campaign centers on two products: pre-sliced, ready-to-eat cultivated lox, and a skincare line built around what Wildtype calls Marine Cellular Complex (MCC), a blend of proteins, peptides, and exosomes the company says is generated as a byproduct of growing its salmon cells. According to Wildtype, the formulation includes salmon-derived PDRN, marine collagen, and growth factors.

“For nine years, we’ve been quietly building something that didn’t seem possible: real salmon, grown from a single cell – without a net, a farm, or the open ocean,” the company states on its campaign page.

Shipping limited by state bans

The lox component of the campaign cannot ship to several states, including Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Indiana, and Texas, all of which have enacted bans on the sale of cultivated meat and seafood. Wildtype, alongside UPSIDE Foods, is currently challenging Texas’s ban in court. Wildtype notes that its skincare products are not affected by these restrictions and will ship worldwide. Backers in restricted states are directed toward the skincare pledge tiers or in-person access through partner restaurants instead.

Wildtype describes itself as the only company currently selling cultivated seafood for purchase, a claim tied to its position as the first and, to date, sole cultivated seafood producer with FDA clearance in the US market.

“We’ve never asked the public to be part of this. We’re asking now,” the company said.
